25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The parable in the Gospel tells of the unimaginable generosity of God. All are invited to the Lord’s kingdom.

The parable presents us with a landowner who goes out to hire workers for his vineyard. The landowner hires people at various times of the day, yet when it comes time to pay the workers, they all get paid the same amount. A person would naturally think that the workers who labored the longest would get paid the most. However, the landowner justifies what he did by saying that he has the right to do as he wishes with his money.

The emphasis in the parable points to the fact that God’s generosity and mercy can’t be earned. It is a gift. God’s perspective is different than ours.
