Fifth Sunday of Easter

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in them will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” (Jn 15:5)

In the gospel reading today, Jesus uses an example from nature to emphasize an important relationship. He refers to himself as the true vine, and his followers as the branches. The image of the vine and branches is used to bring attention to the relationship between Jesus, the Father, and all believers. The image of the vine and the branches is used to help understand the nature of the Church. We must connect to the life giving vine. The Eucharist helps us stay connected to the life giving vine, Jesus Christ.
