July 26, 2015 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Gospel of John tells of the multiplication of loaves and fishes. Jesus asks Philip how the large crowd would be fed. Philip responds that the task would be impossible. Andrew confirms Philip’s opinion by mentioning that all that was available were five loaves and two fishes. Jesus then has the crowd recline. He then blesses the bread and fish and distributes them to the crowd. They all had their fill. This action of Jesus emphasizes that it is the Lord who feeds and sustains us. Philip and Andrew had thought that it would be impossible to feed so many people, but it wasn’t impossible for the Lord. The Lord can take our gifts and multiply them for the good of God’s kingdom.
