November 15, 2015-Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

What were the motives for Jesus to talk about the “end times”? In the gospel today, a type of writing called “apocalyptic” is used. It’s an imagery used to give hope to God’s people, especially those under persecution of any kind. Jesus says “the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken” (Mark). Jesus wants people to be aware that they shouldn’t think time will never run out. Jesus encourages us to be vigilant and alert when it comes to our life in this world, and our relationship with him. Jesus speaking of the “end times” isn’t a threat, but an invitation to greater closeness with God. He calls us to be people of hope.
