September 13, 2015 Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel today, Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” The disciples gave a number of responses. Jesus’ question goes from a general question to a particular question. He goes from “Who do people say that I am”, to “Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter responds, “You are the Christ.” Jesus offers a different understanding of the Christ. He speaks of how he must suffer and die and rise again. Jesus is trying to teach the disciples that being his followers isn't about the exercise of worldly power. It’s about the cross, and about service. It is about giving of oneself. We look to the example that Jesus himself gives.
