The baptism of Jesus by John gives a clearer insight into the identity and mission of Jesus. In his baptism he identifies with the human condition. The gospel tell us that Jesus insisted that John baptize him. John saw himself as being the one who would prepare the way of the Lord. He didn’t see the need for Jesus to have a baptism of repentance. He relents however, and baptizes Jesus.
This gospel sheds light on the mystery of the incarnation. It shows Jesus identifying with the weaknesses, sins, and frailties of humanity. At the same time seen as sharing fully in the divinity of God. This event in the gospel is an epiphany where the divinity of Jesus is revealed.
