Social Justice Committee Minutes (summary)

August 25, 2025 6:00 PM

Agenda items

Dubuque Social Justice Network update: Deacon Bill will send minutes to committee

members when he receives them.

Dubuque Area Congregations United (DACU): Check http://www.dacuonline.org/ for latest

information. Jim Kuhl checks regularly; no recent updates.

Used Book sale November 7-9: Coordinators agree that money raised from sale should go

toward providing food for the hungry. A parish food packing event to that end builds

community. Many books were donated during Lent, and are still being dropped off. There will

be another collection in October, with a request especially for novels & children’s books.

Generations of Faith: Sunday, September 14, 11:30 am-1:30 pm. Theme is “radical

hospitality.” Deacon Bill Hickson & Karen Hoeger will present the work of Catholic Charities to

adults & middle/high school students during breakout session. Lisa McGrane, ELL teacher, will

lead the K-5 session. Lunch is provided.

Rescue Mission Meal: Committee member will contact Rescue Mission to select a date for St.

Anthony to provide food. Announcement will be made at mass the week before, and sign-up

sheets made available for food donations.

Giving Tree: Experienced volunteer will coordinate & attend September meeting.

Funds cut to Catholic Relief Services (CRS): Chairperson provided information and web link

for update on CRS. Consensus that we need to raise awareness and a sense of urgency among

parishioners. Chairperson checking to see how USAID cuts have affected Haiti. Is there a way

to offset impacts through our Haiti committee?

Committee must remain committed to raise awareness of parishioners & provide opportunities to

counteract injustices.

Bishop’s letter on Immigration: Link to site will be put in bulletin and other parish

publications. Deacon Bill will send petitions to be included in Prayer of Faithful to parish

secretary and committee members.

Other Business: Suggested that a social justice article be submitted for the January edition of

the Voice.

Next meeting date: September 29, 2025, 6pm
