Today in the Gospel we hear Jesus speaking to his disciples about His suffering and death. Some of what Jesus says is similar to last week’s Gospel. In both cases the disciples don’t understand. They do not yet grasp Jesus’ true mission.

Further in the Gospel reading, the disciples were discussing among themselves who was the greatest. Jesus then says, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be last of all and the servant of all”. Jesus is emphasizing that the key to discipleship is not found in worldly power but rather in humble service of God, and God’s people.

The model that Jesus sets for our life is one of service and self-giving.
