26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel today, a father instructs his two sons to go to work in the vineyard. The first son refuses to go but later has a change of heart and goes. The second son consents to work, but he never goes. The first son represents those who trust in the mercy of God and experience conversion of heart. Conversion of heart is something that hopefully happens throughout our lives. We are always in need of the mercy and generosity of God. Jesus quite often uses tax collectors and prostitutes as those who are open and receptive to the mercy of Jesus. Living our faith each day is what conversion is about. We pray that we may be like the son who actually went out and worked in the vineyard.
