4th Sunday in Lent

“For God so loved the world that he gave his Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish, but might have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). The passage from the Gospel today begins by saying that Jesus must be “lifted up”, so that everyone who believed in Him may have eternal life. Being “lifted up” in John’s Gospel refers not only to being lifted up on the cross, but also his resurrection.

John’s Gospel also connects Jesus’ death with God’s love for the world. Jesus is God’s gift of total self-giving. God’s desire is that all people come to faith in Jesus and through that faith share in eternal life. The incarnation of Jesus is about love and new life. The Eucharist is the sign of God’s faithful love in Jesus.
