7-February 21, 2016 First Sunday in Lent

“Jesus took Peter, James and John and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothes became dazzling white.” Lk 9:28-29.

This episode in the Gospel of Luke is referred to as the Transfiguration. The literal meaning of the word is “to change the appearance” or “to be transformed”. The transfiguration is a glimpse into the divinity of Jesus and the glory of the resurrection. The transfiguration helped prepare the disciples for Jesus’ death and resurrection. Their experience enabled them to believe when they encountered the empty tomb.

Just like the apostles, we need encouragement in our spiritual lives. We all need encouragement to deal with life’s troubles. The transfiguration is intended to do that.
