Scripture Reflection

In the Gospel today Jesus identifies himself as the “bread of life”. Some of the listeners failed to grasp the significance of what Jesus was saying. Accepting the truth of Jesus’ identity would require faith. There is no “proof” that will satisfy Jesus’ opponents.

Jesus then speaks of the people wandering in the wilderness being fed with manna. He said that the manna could only satisfy the physical hunger, and couldn’t affect the spiritual desire for eternal life. Jesus himself would be the one to satisfy that hunger. Jesus is the one who will sustain and feed his people. Jesus gift of the Eucharist is the true bread come down from heaven.
