Holy Trinity Sunday

Today the Church celebrates Trinity Sunday. The belief in God as a trinity of persons is central to the faith. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, yet one eternal God. Throughout the gospels trinitarian language is used. Jesus indentifies himself with the Father, “The Father and I are one.” Jesus also speaks of sending the advocate (Holy Spirit) to strengthen the Church to carry out its mandate to preach the Gospel.

Throughout the celebration of the Mass there are references to the Church’s belief in God as Trinity. The Mass begins and ends with the invocation of the Trinity, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” One of the prayers for Trinity Sunday says, “Help us to worship you, one God in three persons by proclaiming and living our faith in you.”

In the Eucharistic celebration we offer praise and thanksgiving to God who reveals himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
