The gospel today is about the kingship of Jesus. If Jesus is king what kind of king is he? This is the subject of the back and forth between Jesus and Pilate. Pilate’s understanding of kingship has to do with political power. Jesus, on the other hand, is speaking about kingship in a spiritual sense. The power Jesus is talking about is the power of God’s love. Jesus is trying to clarify that he gets his authority from God’s love, not from any worldly power.
Jesus says that he carries out his mission in testifying to the truth. Jesus’ kingship is exercised through love, mercy, and self-giving. His ultimate act of self-giving will be through his passion and death. As we celebrate Christ the King, let us profess our love and devotion to Jesus our King in our daily living
