Scripture Reflection 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we know the Gospels are full of parables which teach a lesson, or give us insight into the mystery of God’s love, and God’s kingdom. The two parables today compare the growth of seeds to the growth and unfolding of God’s kingdom. The first parable tells of a farmer sowing seed, and how the seeds eventually grow up into grain. The process of growth of the seed was a good example of how the kingdom of God grows. The second parable is very similar. The mustard seed is very small, but grows into a tall bush. The point with the parables of Jesus is that the unfolding of God’s kingdom has a sense of mystery to it. God was the one who makes sure that the kingdom of God’s love continues to unfold. As the people of God, the Church, we are participants in the great mystery of God’s unfolding love.
