Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture Reflection

In the Gospel today, Jesus emphasizes that faith is not about quantity. Faith is about more than teachings and beliefs. It also involves trust and commitment directed toward the Lord. The point Jesus is making is that faith is a powerful thing. It’s not a matter of needing more faith, but using what we have.

Further on in the Gospel, Jesus tells a parable describing a situation where a servant does what he’s expected to do and he gets no special recognition. The point is that no special recognition should be necessary because he was only fulfilling his responsibilities. Jesus wants his disciples to know that discipleship is an ongoing commitment. Jesus tells us that whatever we do to witness to God’s mercy and love is not don on our own merits, but with God’s help.
